ART 211 - Art and Mysticism 1 Units
This course explores the intersection of spirituality, healing, and abstract art, examining how artistic practices have been used for meditation, ritual, and altered states of consciousness. Students will study diverse traditions such as Tibetan thangkas, Navajo sand paintings, Indian Tantra painting, Zen calligraphy, and medieval healing icons, alongside movements like Theosophy, Surrealist automatism, and Abstract Expressionism. Through readings, discussions, studio projects, and field trips, the course integrates Health Humanities perspectives, considering how art contributes to mental, emotional, and communal well-being.
