ART 212 - Artists as Activists

How do artists, graphic designers, writters and performing artists raise ethical questions and advocate social change? Global examples of visual culture will include propaganda, graphic design, film, music video and theater. Relationships between art, images, mass media, and acts of conscience will be evaluated using ethical/philosophical frameworks and formal and contextual analysis. Discussion will include historical, social, and political context of art, its method of production and distribution, and its inherent privileges or risks.
