1 Units
Tropical habitats contain a large proportion of Earth’s biodiversity. But why are the tropics so diverse? This course will explore the diversity of life in terrestrial tropical ecosystems. While examining the incredible array of plant and animal species in tropical environments, students will gain a deep understanding of the ecological processes that shape tropical biodiversity. Through field-based research projects at a tropical field station, students will learn to survey species diversity and estimate population sizes. Topics covered will include species interactions, animal ecology and evolution, impacts of climate change, conservation challenges, and the importance of biodiversity to human societies. With a focus on both the ecological and cultural significance of tropical ecosystems, this course provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to appreciate, study, and conserve tropical biodiversity.
