SOCW 610 - Grief & Loss Across The Lifespan 3 Credits
The purpose of this elective course is to expose the student to issues related to grief and loss that are woven throughout the experiences of clients served. The course will focus on losses related not only to death but to a variety of other experiences including, but not limited to, chronic illness, community disaster, trauma, and relationship(s). Topics will be discussed in the context of individual development across the life cycle (child, adolescent, adult, older adult). Theoretical perspectives are drawn from both traditional and postmodern approaches to grief and loss. Issues of cultural and spiritual diversity and ethics are addressed throughout the course. Emphasis will be placed on therapeutic strategies for facilitating holistic grief work in counseling and other interventions with individuals, families, and communities.
