What can intermediate and secondary school teachers do when students in their classrooms can’t or won’t read? How do learning disabilities and language issues affect students’ reading skills and desire and motivation to read? Participants will examine specific strategies to help adolescents develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and word recognition. Participants will also explore the research base on issues of particular interest to urban literacy educators, including social class, language use, and oppositional identity.Prerequisites: QPA of 2.70; completion of Education 100.2, 160, 210, and 244; field clearances and other documents for fieldwork required, and passing score on the Basic Skills tests (PAPA/CORE or exempt status)(Critical Reading)
