EDUC 580 - Special Education Seminar 3 Credits
This course is designed to support post-baccalaureate and MAT special education candidates during their student teaching experience as they prepare for teacher certification. Emphasis is placed on the development of ethical, reflective, and legally sound professional practice grounded in federal, state, and local requirements, including Pennsylvania’s professional codes of conduct. Candidates engage in collaborative problem-solving with families, general and special educators, related service providers, and community agencies to design and implement effective individualized and inclusive educational programs. The course integrates culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approaches that establish high expectations for all learners while honoring students’ identities, experiences, and family partnerships. Candidates deepen their instructional expertise through the application of evidence-based structured literacy and math practices and research-aligned instructional strategies that promote access to the general education curriculum. Ongoing reflection, professional collaboration, responsible use of technology, and attention to educator wellness and self-care are emphasized to support candidates’ long-term effectiveness and resilience as special education professionals.
