FORL 150 - The City In World Cinema 4 Credits
1 Units
From DC’s Gotham City to Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, from the glamorous fin-de-siècle Paris to post-apocalyptic Tokyo, cities have occupied the center stage of world cinema since its conception. In this class, we will examine both real and imagined cities in films around the world, including Berlin, Los Angeles, Paris, New York, Hong Kong, Beirut, Tokyo, Gotham, and Derry, Maine (yes, where IT lives), to name a few. We will compare and contrast different depictions of cities in movies, discuss the philosophical, social, and cultural implications of these portrayals, and explore how cinema and the city contend with and actively shape each other throughout history.
