FORL 121 - Three Amigos: Mexican Filmmakers 4 Credits

This course introduces students to film studies through the work of three Mexican-born directors and longtime friends: Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. Known as “the Three Amigos,” these close collaborators have each won multiple Academy Awards and have played a substantial role in shaping global cinema. Drawing on a selection of their films, we will study the fundamental elements of film analysis and technique, including narrative structure, mise-en-scène, cinematography, editing, and sound. The course also examines how audience and cultural context influence the production and reception of film, with particular attention to questions of transnational cinema. In addition, students will develop foundational research skills by locating, evaluating, and integrating academic and non-academic sources into their work. Overall, this course fosters sustained critical engagement with cinema as an art form and highlights how artistic friendship and collaboration can shape film history.
