COMM 358 - Segregation in America:Jim Crow 1 Units
This course offers a grounded approach for tracing and interpreting how the language of 19th century post-bellum America continued to shape and ultimately preserved systems that historically justified inequality by institutionalizing difference. Investigating the Jim Crow system as a set of communication practices and habits, we will revisit the period before comparing it to the other regions of the country, which will then allow us to draw upon more critical examinations of the political, economic, and social forces that continue to underscore discussions of race, class, gender, and power in the whole of American life. (U2). Open to juniors and seniors only.
