FORL 111 - French Lit 4 Credits
1 Units
Students read classics of French literature spanning a thousand years that explore the themes of the fun and folly of youth. Stories begin with an historical medieval love affair that ends in mutilation of body and soul, and finish with a fictionalized auto biographical novel about the personal and academic challenges of a feisty, Algerian immigrant in Paris ; along the way are an iconic poem about seizing the day, short stories about the cost of succumbing to temptation, and a powerful drama about family loyalty and speaking truth to power. Francophone voices in English originate from continental France, Canada and North Africa. This literary overview seeks to develop skills in critical reading, analysis, written reflection and engaged discussion about joys and challenges of the human condition.
