FORL 151 - Introduction to Chinese Cinemas

4 Credits

1 Units

From early Peking-opera inspired silent films to gangster and gunfu (kungfu, but with guns!) blockbusters, the evolution of Chinese cinema both reflects and shapes the rapidly changing historical, social, and cultural conditions of the Chinese speaking world. Born in a Shanghai tea house in 1896, only one year after the invention of film in the West, Chinese cinema has taken a unique path compared to its western counterpart. This course introduces students to the cinema of mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Chinese diaspora, from the late 19th century to the present day. Through weekly film viewings, online and in-class discussions, and assigned readings, students will survey Chinese films in terms of historical contexts, major themes and genres, and aesthetic forms (especially artistic influences originated from Chinese and other Asian cultures, such as opera, drama, novel, landscape painting, shadow play, etc.). Particular attention will be given to questions of nationhood, class, gender, race, and their complex relationships in the formation of Chinese cinema. Throughout the course, students will also develop the skills and vocabulary of analyzing films, articulating their own critical views, and presenting their film analyses (written and video essays).
