ART 147 - Screenprinting

1 Units

Put your creative skills to work using the techniques of screen printing. Develop your concepts of design and use the elements of color, motif, pattern, and repetition to create unique works of art. A field trip will be offered to experience state-of-the-art commercial screen printing operations. This class is designed for beginning through advanced students and covers the techniques of stencils, open-screen color, drawing methods, photo emulsion methods, as well as C.M.Y.K. registration and printing. In this six-week class, students will experience the production of editioned fine art works as well as printing on fabric and clothing. Screen printing is now non-toxic and much more user-friendly and still allows the artist a great range of versatility and image-making. No prior printmaking prerequisite is required. This course will require the student to use the elements of art, including composition, design and color. Students must develop personal imagery choices and apply them to works of art. The elements of repetition, rhythm, and all-over pattern will be emphasized, as well as the principles of color and composition. A current exposure to the “state of screen printing” will be met by regional field trips throughout the semester. Three basic techniques will be explored in screen printing: stencils, drawing fluid methods, and photo emulsion technique. Any or all of these methods may be combined when developing an image. Several projects emphasizing these techniques will be required throughout the semester. Instructor-led formal critiques will be held throughout the semester to evaluate student progress and the development of the student’s personal imagery. A Personal Discovery Project/Presentation is also required.
